The United Nations INformation Centres (UNICs) were responsible for many events taking place across the world during Stand Up Take Action 2011 on the International Day for Poverty Eradication. Short descriptions of the events taking place are as follows:
UNIC Accra will mobilize about 500 children from ten schools in Accra to present a petition to parliament reminding the government about its commitment to meet the Millennium Development Goals 2015 deadline and the people of Ghana to Stand Up and Take Action against Poverty.
UNIC Antananarivo will organize a gospel concert and one week of sensitization on the Millennium Development Goals called, “Caravane pour les OMD”. During the week about 17,000 people will Stand Up against Poverty. The week-long events will be held in collaboration with the UN Development Programme, UN agencies, diplomatic corps and the general public.
UNIC Bogota will organize Stand Up activities with the UN Development Programme and the Millennium Development Goal Fund in the main province of African descent population in Colombia – Chocó in conjunction with the International Year for People of African Descent.Children and young people (9 to 15 years old) will participate in a photo and drawing contest on how and to what extent poverty has affected their lives. An award ceremony attended by Chocó’s mayor will be held in November with a photo exhibition later showcasing the winning photos and drawings.
UNIC Brazzaville will organize a tour for 100 elementary school students to the regional World Health Organization office in Africa where they will be briefed on the Millennium Development Goals. Banderoles displaying "Stand Up against Poverty" slogan will be deployed on the vehicles.
UNIC Colombo will organize a poverty march by 600 school children to mark Poverty Day and Stand Up and Take Action against Poverty at the Rambuka Maha Vidyalaya in Kalawana, the district where poverty is most acute and where the people are engaged mostly in toddy tapping, tea plucking, traditional fishing, mining and farming. Students will march and meet the villagers at the village fair and perform a street drama. Later, students, parents and villagers, numbering over 750, will gather for motivational lectures, reading of the UN Secretary-General’s message, the poverty pledge, stage cultural events and distribute high-yield seeds and plants to the villagers. Pamphlets, book marks, book cases depicting Stand Up symbols will be distributed along with the Food and Agriculture Organization promotional posters and banners on the International Year of Forests and the International Year of Chemistry. UN publications, books, CDs on IT and the English language will be donated to the school library.
UNIC Dar es Salaam along with the Tanzania Association of Non- governmental Organizations (TANGO), the Southern Africa Human Rights NGO Network Tanzania chapter (SAHRiNGON), the Tanzania Youth Coalition, the Reach Youth of Tanzania (REYOTA), the Taaluma Women Group will observe Poverty Day with the Vice-President of Tanzania Mohamed Gharib Bilal as guest of honour. UNIC Accra will also a dialogue with youth on the theme, “The Tanzania We Want” at the International Labour Organization office.
UNIC Dhaka and the UN Youth and Students’ Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB) will jointly organize Stand Up and Take Action against Poverty initiatives, which include debates, video shows, poverty rallies, a signature campaign at the Independent University in Chittagong, Dhaka University and various localities in Sherpur district.
UNIC Kathmandu’s Stand Up event at UN House will feature a Millennium Development Goal-related concert by youth attended by over a hundred school and college students, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, heads of UN agencies and UN staff.
UNIC Khartoum in collaboration with the Youth Branch of the UN National Association will organize a Stand Up mobilization event at the Al-Mawrada Sports Club in Omdurman. A concert by a local music band and a presentation by a private sector company will illustrate the role of the civil society and the corporate sector in fighting poverty.
UNIC Lagos will organize a week-long exhibition, “Art Against Poverty” at the Nigerian National Museum and Monument in Lagos featuring paintings and works that illustrate various facets of poverty in Nigerian society. UNIC Lagos along with the Lagos-based NGO "5 Loaves 2 Fishes" will host week-long activities to assist the poor residents of Zion Community with used clothes, food and heath care information.
UNIC Mexico will translate and adapt for Latin American audiences and, in some cases, develop original materials to promote the Stand Up campaign among the audiences in the region. The material will be available at a special webpage. The Stand Up campaign will also be promoted through UNIC Mexico’s social media outlets and through NGO and other contacts using "traditional" means, such as email.
UNIC Moscow will organize aStand Up mobilization event at the Moscow Central Dobroliubov Children’s Libraryhighlighting the Millennium Development Goals, in general, and the eradication of poverty, in particular. Stand UpandUN4You videos will be projected on a large screen for the audience, followed by school students reading the Stand Up pledge. The event will conclude with Bob Marley’s song, “Get Up, Stand Up”. Finally, students will sign the Stand Up pledge and send it to Russian parliamentarians.
UNIC Ouagadougou will arrange a 90-minute TV debate on the challenges and strategies to accelerate the achievement of the Millennium development Goals (MDGs) in West Africa, especially in Burkina Faso. The TV programme will advocate a productive involvement of governments, civil society, business community and technical and financial institutions in implementing actions to achieve the MDGs.
UNIC Port of Spain will collaborate for the second year with the End Hunger Committee from Rio Claro in Trinidad to host a walk through the streets of the town and Stand Up, where school children will display illustrations of their impression of the Millennium development Goals. The turn out this year is expected to go beyond one thousand
UNIC Tehran in cooperation with the Professional Football League Organization (PFLO) of Iran will commemorate Stand Up activity at Azadi Stadium during the match between Esteghlal and Rah Ahan FCs. Also, the Islamic Azad University will hold Stand Up mobilization events throughout its campuses in Iran.
UNIC Yaounde in collaboration with the UN Development Programme, the Food and Agriculture Organization and UN Women will organize Stand Up at Hotel de Ville in Yaounde with some 200 high school Students and NGOs where the UN Resident Coordinator will read the Secretary-General’s message.
UNO/Yerevan, the UN Development Programme andcivil society partners will organize flash mobs in a few cities in Armenia and organize a photo exhibition dedicated to the Stand Up campaign. Photos collected from throughout Armenia will show how people can take an action to eliminate poverty in their families, villages and communities. Participants will receive UN certificates of appreciation and UN publications in Armenian.
UNIC Kathmandu marked the Stand Up Against Poverty event on 18 October in the UN House Rose Garden. Heads of various UN Agencies, UN staff members and school children participated in the event numbering around three hundred. On the occasion UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Robert Piper read out the message of the Secretary-General. Balloons were released by all participants. Three MDG related songs were performed by local youths.
