The Marquee event of this year's Stand Up in Japan, a Tokyo parade, was organised at the center of Shibuya. The event was organized in collaboration with the Farmers' Market, a weekly urban market promoting sustainable agriculture and restoring the interaction between farmers and consumers. Over 300 people who crossed the market showed their support and participated throughout the day.
At 4:45, the main parade kicked off on the streets of Shibuya with a drum roll. Two hundred people colorfully dressed in support of the MDGs shouted "Stand Up Take Action to End World Poverty!" and “Prime Minister Kan, Please Fulfill Your Responsibility!”
The participants also brought instruments to make noise, signifying each of the MDG Goals. For example, the supporters of Goal 1, poverty reduction and hunger elimination, brought empty pots and pans with spoons to make noise, whilst spectators loudly cheered for the parade.
The day ended with a dialogue organized by the Farmers' Market and Ugoku/Ugokasu (GCAP Japan). In the talk, the speakers emphasized the important roles each individual in Japan and in the world has to play to achieve the MDGs.
Like last year, Stand Up, Take Action in Japan this year saw huge public participation with 261 pre-registered events in 44 (out of 47) prefectures. It is estimated that nearly 13,000 people in Japan have participated in the campaign this year.
