The Stand Up and Be Counted will happen during regularly scheduled Sunday service of the Unitarian (and Universalist) church in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.
All staff and students will learn about the Stand Up movement on Thursday and then will stand up for the pledge on Friday during the 360 (homeroom) period. One of the pillars of our school is Social Justice, so this is a great way to show solidarity with the world.
On Friday Oct. 17, during our homeroom meetings, the students and staff at St. Joseph High School in Saskatoon Canada will gather in the hallways and collectively pledge to stand against poverty. St. Joseph is the home of the Guardians and we believe it is our responsibility to care for the community through service to others.
We’ll be gathering at the Lutheran Campus Centre on the corner of College Dr and Wiggins ave in Saskatoon. At 12 we’ll briefly discuss the Millenium Development Goals and the purpose of Stand up to Poverty, after which we’ll stand up in unison and remain that way for 1 minute.
All students from our school will assemble to hear a message from Robert Fox, the Executive Director of Oxfam Canada, and make the pledge. SCIC will also be present to promote their comic books, which deal with social and ecological justice issues.
Mutkar Abduke Ahmed from Ethiopia, Harvey Knight of the Muskoday First Nations, and Karen Archibal from CHEP Saskatoon will be speaking out about food production and environmental sustainability in Ethopia, reclaiming Indigenous food culture, and how core neighbourhoods build good food alternatives respectively.
In recognition of the “take action” event SEDA is asking its members and volunteers to participate during our regularly scheduled tournament event, which includes a speech portion.
